How To Get Stronger After 50

Someone on Expat Exchange wrote about having an injury doing bench presses. I replied with a comment that as I've gotten older I don't try to do max lifts any more to avoid tendon and joint injuries. It's worked well, so far. One reader replied that he believes you should not do weights after 60. I disagree completely. I think it's important to keep doing weights, but do them intelligently.

Above is a link to an article that I saw today stressing 3 points about exercise after age 50. I think these are very good points, especially the first and third points. In summary, to reinforce my own memory, these are the three points:

1 - Spend more time exercising with less intensity (less weight, more sets, more reps)
2 - Get injuries treated quickly
3 - Don't quit weight training when you get older

I especially like point 1. When I am in Colombia I won't have as much to keep me busy and I can spend more time in the gym. The gym in Colombia is a pretty nice place to hang out, if you know what I mean. Wink, wink.

Indeed the gym can be a reason to smile in Colombia! I do a routine that was passed on to me by a friend at work. His brother-in-law is with the Air Rescue Squad of the USAF. The routine is done with light weights but faster reps for a minute. Spend very little time going from station-to-station. So it is strength training mixed with cardio. Now, I do that routine 3 days a week at work, (I am fortunate that I have a gym at work and do it during my lunch break). On Tue. and Thur., I do pure cardio on the elliptical. I prefer that over a standard treadmill because its not so hard on your knees and you are working your arms at the same time. At the end I do 2 minutes of stomach crunches on a gym ball, (to support my back), 2 minutes of '6 inches', (if you ever played football you'll know what that is), and 2 minutes of plank. I finish with stretches because I want to keep it all loose after I am finished! 25 years and still going strong!
